The Brief:
3T RPD work with many UK and European designers and architects, and has developed a close working relationship with Freedom Of Creation in The Netherlands. Having recently won a commission from Dutch design company Wetzels Brown Partners, Freedom Of Creation co-developed the creation of 23 unique chairs for a 100ft. sailing yacht and private residence.  The innovative design of the chair was inspired by Freedom Of Creation’s Janne Kyttanen’s Macedonia tray, which was created in 2007 for The Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The Solution:
The intricate woven structure of the chair lent itself perfectly to the use of Selective Laser Sintering technology; an additive layer manufacturing method that creates complex parts in a tough Nylon material. It was important that the outer shell of the chair be manufactured in a single piece to give it strength and continuity, and with some of the world’s largest plastic AM machines at their manufacturing site in Newbury, Berkshire, 3T were able to do just that.

The Result:
With extreme accuracy and fast build times, 3T produced all the chairs in just a matter of weeks, creating one of the largest single pieces ever produced by Freedom Of Creation using this technology.  The chairs were given a high gloss finish and seamlessly connected to a matching high gloss metal base, which allows the chair to swivel freely. The cutting edge outer structure is combined with a traditional high quality padded leather shell which can easily be popped in and out of the chair structure.
