3T producing space qualified parts for Airbus Defence and Space
3T are producing the first space qualified aluminium Additive Manufactured (3D printed) components for Airbus Defence and Space in UK as part of a programme to introduce components that cannot be manufactured using conventional technology. The single-piece structural bracket for the Eurostar E3000 telecommunications satellites weighs 35% less than the previous bracket which comprised four parts and 44 rivets. Furthermore, it is 40% stiffer than the previously manufactured component and reduces the waste generated by conventional machining.
Used for mounting the telemetry and telecommand (TMTC) antennas onto the satellite, the bracket has successfully completed flight qualification testing, and is ready to be flown on a forthcoming satellite.
