David Oswald,
an HND Mechanical Engineering
student from Newbury College,
designed a centre console for the Smart car. The car currently does
not incorporate a centre console, and as such this area was identified
as a design aspect that needed addressing.
David ensured his design fitted into the existing
Smart Car without any alteration or damage to the existing fittings.
It also had to meet current safety standards and legislation, and
comply aesthetically with the interior.
To meet these specifications, David researched the
design of existing car centre consoles, as well as undertaking market
research on car users to ascertain their requirements. Consideration
was given to the dimensions, ergonomics and aesthetics of the Smart
Car.
Once David's design was approved, the components
were built using 3T's SLS technology, fitted to the car and tested
in true working environments.
