Guardian journalist flies 3D printed UAV
Owen Bowcott of The Guardian newspaper has flown the unmanned aerial vehicle designed and printed in partnership by The University of Southampton and 3T RPD. Bowcott took control of the radio transmitter and flew the UAV during a series of interviews he conducted with the SULSA (Southampton University Laser Sintered Aircraft) team. A full report appeared in the newspaper (Guardian, 21 September 2011) and the report and video is on The Guardian website. Bowcott and the professional pilot brought back the plastic additive manufactured aircraft safely … unlike one of the other UAVs being tested the same day which was on its inaugural – and last – flight. Had a similar fate befallen the SULSA, it would have been possible to ‘reprint’ any of the parts in a matter of days.
Following its industry début at the DSEi show (13 September 2011), the UAV will be a major draw at the TCT Live Exhibition taking place in Birmingham’s NEC this week (27 – 29 September 2011). Come and see it and meet the 3T team on stand E20 in Hall 3a.
