The possible applications for Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) are very broad indeed but because the technology is so new, the extent to which it can be applied within different industries has not yet been fully explored. With the speed of the machines increasing all the time and the range of metals continuing to grow, the viable options and opportunities for their application will become more widely recognised.
Current applications for DMLS beyond the stated industries are:
- Jewellery
- Dental
- Art/Sculpture
- Marine/Yachting
As awareness of DMLS grows, so will the add-on applications associated with it. For example, the software written by "Complex Matters" that can create intelligent internal structures will enable the production of super-lightweight, ultra-high stiffness components. This is a field that has only just started to be investigated, and yet holds substantial potential. The software, developed by Dr Siavash Mahdavi, will revolutionise structural design over the coming years, and can maximise the capabilities of the DMLS process.
