Ask Our Experts

Our customers appreciate the additive manufacturing experts that work at 3T. From the first phone call, to the final quality check and authorisation for dispatch, it's our 3T team that makes the difference. Everyone is trained to deliver quality service and quality products, and our high standards have been recognised with ISO certification 13485 - the standard required for medical devices - and ISO certification 9001.

We've profiled some of the people you'll be in contact with if you get in touch. But we also know that the people in "the backroom team" are just as important for delivering quality products, so we'd like to introduce you to some of them here as well.

Rachel

Rachel
Quality Manager

My job

My role is to ensure our products and services exceed our customers’ quality requirements. To maintain our excellent reputation for quality within the industry is a critical focus of my work. To achieve this, a significant proportion of my time is invested in working directly with customers, suppliers and colleagues to continually assess and develop our processes.

Best bit of job

I really appreciate working with such a positive team.  My colleagues are full of excellent ideas for improving our products and services, which makes my role a very enjoyable one.

Experience

After studying at the Institute for Manufacturing, Cambridge University, I worked for a manufacturer of high-precision measuring instruments for 9 years.  During this time I developed from Product Engineer through to Production & Quality Manager.  This provided me with the hands-on manufacturing experience coupled with practical implementation of quality standards, which is so crucial in my role at 3T.

When not at work

When not at work I am usually having lots of fun with my young family … plenty of Lego, toy cars and cycling to the park!

Luis

Luis
Plastic Finisher/ Breakout Engineer

My job

I work on every aspect of the customers parts after being built and before they go out of the door. Best bit of job

Every day, I have the pleasure of being the first person in the world to touch a brand new thing.

Experience

My background is as an aircraft engineer and telecom engineer in Portugal.

When not at work

Clive

Clive
Plastic Workshop Manager

My job

I lead the team that does all the post production work on the parts.  We do the finishing of all the plastic parts - whether that's hand painting, spraying, model making - whatever.  That means I have a keen eye on quality control and keep up to date with the technology to ensure we are giving our customers the very best service and products.

Best bit of job

I like the challenge of not knowing what's coming round the corner - and then working out how to give the customer what they want ... and sometimes delivering a part that is even better than they thought they wanted!  I'm a craftsman at heart and I love it when customers appreciate the 'craft' that has gone into producing their parts.  And I enjoy passing on my skills.

Experience

I trained as a silversmith and have worked in the aerospace and consumer goods sectors.  I've got a broad background and can honestly say I've never had a boring job.

When not at work

Once an artist, always an artist - I paint and sculpt in my spare time.

Graham

Ensuring all customers parts are built to the highest quality, scheduling the machine capacity and managing the SLS production team.

Best bit of job

Fulfilling the customer's requirements, accurately and on time.

Jon

Jon
Metal Production Engineer

My job

I provide technical and design assistance to customers at the initial quote stage, and run the metal machines that we have on site.  At the initial quote stage I provide the technical input to ensure components are priced accurately, and then ensure parts are manufactured to the highest quality possible.

Best bit of job

Every geometry that is manufactured in metal is slightly different from the last.  I enjoy pushing the technology to achieve what others believe to be impossible.

Experience

After graduating from Loughborough University with a design degree I have worked in the additive manufacturing industry since 2004. Having worked on SLS, SLA, Wax and Vacuum Casting technologies, I have been focusing on metal AM technology for five years.

When not at work

I attempt to travel and see as much of the world as possible with my amazing wife.  I also enjoy photography, both landscape and wedding.

Marc

Marc
Metal Workshop Engineer

My job

In the workshop finishing all the metal parts to customers' requirements. Also, when a part is built, removing it from the machine, painstakingly cleaning the machine to make sure no foreign bodies are in it and setting the machine up to start the next build cycle.

Best bit of job

As the EDM expert in the workshop, I find the mental challenge of working with the machine very rewarding - making the wire path cut the part just right and getting the part out to the customer's exact specification.

Experience

I joined 3T as an apprentice. I'm completing my HND in Mechanical Engineering at the moment.

When not at work

Studying (see above!)

Martyn

Martyn
Metal Projects Manager

My job

My key role is Metal Projects Manager which means that I act as the main contact point for customers once an order has been placed, as well as supplying initial quotes and basic technical information.  I also cover other roles within 3T including H&S, IT and purchasing.

Best bit of job

I enjoy the interaction with customers and the satisfaction of providing solutions where others cannot.  I also very much enjoy the diversity that my job role allows.

Experience

I completed a 4 year mechanical engineering apprenticeship at AWE and then left to work as a CNC Precision Machinist.  I have now been at 3T for almost 11 years and have good experience across most areas of the company having spent seven years working as a Plastic (SLS) CAD Engineer before moving across to the Metals (DMLS) team. I also support the in-house IT requirements and day-to-day maintenance of the network and servers.

When not at work

I enjoy spending time with my wife and new baby boy. Aside from this my main passion in life is cycling.  I compete on both road and track and have been lucky enough to represent GB at a European competition level.

Dave

Dave
Plastic Workshop Engineer

My job

I'm responsible for all operations once the parts have left the machines - once it's a real thing rather than a pile of noughts and ones. We do the first of the series of quality checks, and then complete a range of finishing tasks to the customers' specification. That can involve painting, colouring, fitting inserts, smoothing, assembling (welding and gluing) and anything else the customers’ requests.

Best bit of job

I like it all. I like the variety, particularly the fact that we make bespoke pieces rather than having to work on thousands of the same part.

Experience

I’ve been an electroplater and non destructive testing inspector. I've worked in the aerospace and defence industries.

When not at work

I’ve been an electroplater and non destructive testing inspector. I've worked in the aerospace and defence industries.

Vaughan

Vaughan
Metal Workshop Engineer

My job

I specialise in 3, 4 and 5 axis machining.  I utilize my skills where possible however, due to the nature of metal AM, sometimes hand finishing is the most effective way of producing quality parts that conform to customer needs.

Best bit of job

Programming the 3 axis milling machine to produce parts accurate to very small tolerances is always very pleasing.

Experience

From leaving school I have always been involved in engineering.  After completing a five year ONC apprenticeship, I have continued to improve and hone my CNC milling skills in various high precision engineering jobs.

When not at work

Away from work I enjoy cooking, fishing, reading, gaming and spending time with my family.

Annika

Best bit of job

Seeing the parts on the bench.  When a part looks crisp with good colouring and surface texture, I know I’m doing my job well and that the customer will be happy.

Experience

I started my career as an apprentice mechanical engineer.  Then went into a drawing office where I polished my CAD skills.  I started at 3T on the CAD side, moved into projects and now enjoy working on the process control side.

When not at work

Hamish
Metal Production Engineer

My job

I am part of a team that is involved in the initial quotation, setup, and building of DMLS components. Throughout this stage we assess customer and process requirements to attain the best possible outcome, with the help of rapid prototyping specific software. Following on from this we set up, start and monitor the DMLS machines during the build process.

Best bit of job

As rapid prototyping is a pivotal part of the product development process it's great to be able to contribute to so many industries and applications. It's also nice to see the enthusiasm many customers have when first introduced to the process.
